There is a wide range of tourist activities across the Far North, most of them involving the ocean. No matter where you go in your rental car in the Far North, you’re never more than 40 kilometres from the coast. On that coast, you’ll see the most sublime variety of gorgeous beaches, coves and harbours that can be found on the planet.
Kaitaia is the gateway to the Far North’s many tourist attractions which include: Cape Reinga, 90 Mile Beach and the Waipoua Forest, the home of Tane Mahuta, the largest Kauri Tree in New Zealand. In Kaitaia you will find great cafes and bars, The Ancient Kauri Kingdom, Gumdiggers Park and a selection of wineries.
One hour south of Kaitaia in your rental car is Kerikeri which is known for it’s boutique shopping and excellent cafes. Kerikeri if full of rich history including The Stone Store which is New Zealand’s oldest building. The famous Rewa’s Village will take you back in time to before any European settlement existed. You need to make time to visit the Kerikeri Mission Station and Pete’s Pioneers Transport Museum which is a must see.
In your rental car Paihia is only a fifteen minute drive from Kerikeri and is the access point to the world renowned Bay of Islands. You can go swimming with the dolphins, go kayaking, fishing on any of the amazing charters, or enjoy fish and chips on one of the many secluded beaches or enjoy a relaxed stroll or drive to the stunning Haruru Falls. You and the family can learn about early New Zealand history where the Treaty of Waitangi was first signed and discover authentic Maori culture first hand.
